Sandwich Generation Caregivers

An estimated 3,500–4,500 adults in Ward 1 are part of the “sandwich generation”, raising children while also caring for aging parents.

These residents are juggling competing responsibilities and need practical, community-centered support.

Seniors in the Community

About 16% of Ward 1’s population is 65 or older. Many seniors here are choosing to age in place, remaining connected to the neighborhoods they've contributed to for decades. Supporting their independence, safety, and dignity is a key priority.

Small Business Landscape

Ward 1 is home to an estimated 3,750–4,000 small businesses, ranging from local corner stores to design studios and skilled trades.

Across Calgary, 95% of businesses have fewer than 50 employees, and nearly two-thirds have just 1–4. These are the kinds of businesses Dan champions because they’re not just economic drivers, they’re the heart of our neighborhoods.
