Donation Guidelines: How to Support Dan’s Campaign

Understanding the New Rules for Municipal Donations (2024)
In Spring 2024, the Alberta Government introduced new rules for municipal political campaigns.
Now, individuals, corporations, and unions can all legally donate, but it’s up to you as the donor to keep track of your own contribution limits.

Who Can Donate?
-
Alberta residents
-
Trade unions and employee organizations based in Alberta
-
Corporations that do business in Alberta (as long as they’re not restricted by the LAEA)

Individual Donor Limits
To Candidates:
-
You can donate up to $5,000 total per calendar year to all municipal candidates (includes councillors and mayor).
-
This is a combined limit, not per candidate.
Example: If you donate $1,000 to a mayoral candidate, you can donate up to $4,000 more to other candidates that year. -
If you want to support many candidates equally, the donation per person will need to be divided accordingly (e.g., $333.33 each across 15 candidates).
To Municipal Political Parties:
-
You can also donate up to $5,000 total per year to municipal political parties.

Corporate, Union & Employee Organization Limits
Note: Related corporations (as defined by Section 256 of the Income Tax Act) are treated as one single entity for donation purposes.
To Candidates:
-
Corporations, unions, and employee organizations can contribute up to $5,000 total over the full election period (2024–2025 combined).
-
This total applies across all candidates.
To Municipal Political Parties:
-
These groups can also contribute up to $5,000 total over the full election period to political parties.

Your support matters more than you think
Every dollar you give fuels a campaign built on listening, transparency, and action. Your support helps us knock on more doors, host more conversations, and reach more neighbors who deserve to be heard. This campaign doesn’t answer to big donors or party insiders, it runs on real community power.
Dan is committed to grassroots outreach and inclusive engagement. And whether we win or lose, any surplus funds will go right back into your local community association because this campaign isn’t about power. It’s about people.
